To equip the students with knowledge and skills that will uphold, and foster professionalism.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, the students should be able to:
- Describe the historical development of the nursing profession.
- Explore the role of the nurse in health care delivery system.
- Explain the professional code of conduct for nurses and midwives.
- Describe legislation and regulation governing nursing practice in Zambia.

COURSE AIM:
To equip the students with knowledge and skills in nutrition in health and illness
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, the students should be able to:
- Explain the importance of nutrition to growth and development; and maintenance of health.
- Describe the nutritional values and functions of commonly available foods.
- Assist individuals and families in managing daily dietary requirements in health and illness.
- Describe the methods for preserving, cooking and storing food, and their implications on the nutritive values.
This is a half course, it will take 40 hours of theory
COURSE AIM:
To assist students understand the characteristics and actions of selected microorganisms related to human health and disease
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, the students should be able to:
- Describe the characteristics of various microorganisms.
- Outline the factors that promote growth and development microorganisms.
- Explain the host microbial interactions in the human body.
- Describe laboratory procedures for identifying and examining microorganisms.
- Interpret selected laboratory findings.
- Apply the principles of microbiology in infection prevention.
This is a half course, it will take 25 theoretical hours
COURSE AIM:
To enable the students acquire knowledge of basic concepts of psychology in relation to human behaviour.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Describe personality development
- Identify factors, which influence human behaviour.
- Explain the concepts of human behaviour and their influence on nursing practice
- Explain the relevance of psychology to nursing.
- Apply the concepts of interpersonal relationships to the care of individual, family and community.
- Describe perception, motivation and learning as processes of human behaviour.
This is a half course that will be covered in 30 hours
THEORY: 30 Hours
COURSE AIM: To equip students with basic sociological concepts to enable them understand the society in which they are working and the influence of these on human behaviour in health and illness.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course the student should be able to:
- Define sociology and sociological concepts related to nursing.
- Identify traditional, cultural beliefs and practices which can influence health and illness.
- Describe the influence of social units and institutions on people in health and illness.
- Discuss the influence of urbanisation and Industrialisation on health
- Explain the relevance of sociology to nursing
- Explain the relationship between gender and health
- Explain factors that contribute to gender based violence
- Explain patterns of care for illness
This is a Full course which will be covered in 336 hours

- PRACTICAL: 245 Hours
COURSE AIM:
1. To equip students with knowledge and skill in disease identification, prevention and networking with other agencies in the provision of quality public health services.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- Describe public health trends in Zambia, the region and at international level.
- Describe the organization of public health services in Zambia.
- Identify public health problems prevalent in Zambia.
- Apply knowledge and skills in the prevention of clients with HIV and AIDS. 5. Describe the Public health policies in Zambia.
- Explain concepts and principles of Primary Health Care (PHC).
- Discuss the role of regional and international health agencies in health development.
- To equip students with knowledge and skill in disease identification, prevention and networking with other agencies in the provision of quality public health services.
- Mobilize resources for planning and implementation of public health nursing.
- Utilize appropriate public health nursing strategies and interventions to meet the identified needs.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the importance and use of records and reports in the implementation of health care.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skill of disaster management.
This is a full course which will be covered in 437 hours

COURSE AIM:
To equip students with knowledge, skills, and attitudes in basic nursing principles in order to provide comprehensive nursing care to individuals, families and communities.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course the student should be able to:
- Describe the organisation and functions of the hospital and community and roles of various members of the health care team.
- Perform basic nursing procedures.
- Use the nursing process to develop a nursing care plan.
- Document and interpret information correctly.
- Apply nursing theories and models in client care.
- Identify situations requiring first aid management.
- Utilise first aid knowledge and skills in the management of emergency situations.
- Explain the grieving process.
- Describe the procedure for care of the body after death.
