COURSE  AIM:

To provide students with a foundation in nursing knowledge, and skills, in order to provide comprehensive nursing care to meet the basic health needs of individuals and families in hospitals and the community

 COURSE OBJECTIVES

 At the end of the course the student should be able to:

  1. Describe the organization and functions of the hospital and the community and roles of various members of the health care team.
  2. Perform basic nursing procedures.
  3. Use the nursing process to develop a nursing care plan.
  4. Document and interpret information correctly.
  5. Apply nursing theories and models in client care.

THEORY: 97 Hours                                                      

COURSE AIM: 

To introduce students to basic principles of anatomy and physiology to enable them provide effective comprehensive nursing care in health and illness. 

COURSE OBJECTIVES 

At the end of the course student should be able to: 

  1. Identify the structure and parts of the human body 
  2. Describe the cells and tissues of various systems 
  3. Explain the normal physiological processes of the human body

 COURSE HOURS:

THEORY:  - 45 HOURS

COURSE AIM:

To equip students with knowledge and skill in Pharmacology

 COURSE OBJECTIVES

 At the end of the course, the students should be able to:

  1. Explain the evolution of drug therapy and the implications of the National Drug Policy in Zambia.
  2. Describe the actions, contra-indications and the side effects of commonly used drugs.
  3. Demonstrate skills in calculating, measuring, preparing and administering drugs.
  4. Prescribe and dispense commonly used drugs.
  5. Describe the responsibilities of the nurse in drug administration.

 COURSE AIM:

To equip students with knowledge and skill in disease identification, prevention and networking with other agencies in the provision of quality public health services.

 COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course, the students should be able to:

  1. Mobilise resources for planning and implementation of public health nursing.
  2. Devise appropriate public health nursing strategies and interventions to meet the identified needs.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance and use of records and reports in the implementation of health care.

COURSE HOURS:

THEORY: -  90  HOURS

PRACTICAL:  -  225 HOURS

 COURSE AIM:

To equip students with knowledge and skills in Surgery and Surgical nursing including basic principles of operating theatre nursing and effects of anaesthetic agents on patients.

 COURSE OBJECTIVES

 At the end of the course, the students should be able to:

  1. Define terms and concepts used in surgery.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of principles of surgery and surgical nursing.
  3. Describe the common surgical conditions affecting various systems of the body.
  4. Apply the appropriate nursing model in the management of patients with surgical conditions.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of principles of operating theatre nursing and the role of the nurse in the theatres.
  6. Identify and utilize available resources for rehabilitation of patients, including referral to appropriate organizations.

PRACTICAL:  -  225 HOURS

COURSE AIM:

To acquire knowledge, skills and understanding of common medical conditions, in order to provide comprehensive nursing care to clients and their families in hospitals, health centres and community settings.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

 At the end of the course, the students should be able to:

  1. Describe the common medical conditions affecting various systems of the body.
  2. Explain the management, prevention and control of common infectious diseases in the hospital, health centre and community setting.
  3.  Interpret medical diagnostic investigations and prescribe appropriate interventions.
  4. Apply the appropriate nursing model in the management of patients.
